Can I Get a Breast Lift without Implants?

Dr. Alexander Ereso frequently receives from breast lift candidates is, “Can I have breast lift without implants?” Because this comes up so often in consultation, the plastic surgeons thought it would be helpful to address it in a blog post. Read on as Dr. Ereso reveals the honest truth about breast lift without implants.

Breast Lift vs. Augmentation-Mastopexy

Breast lift (mastopexy) without implants can deliver beautiful, natural-looking results. The procedure is designed to reverse sagging caused by aging, gravity, weight loss and nursing, and restore the breasts to their former glory. During the mastopexy procedure, excess skin is removed, the nipple is repositioned higher on the breast mound and the areola can be reduced in size if desired. This creates a perkier breast shape and contour – but it doesn’t significantly alter the volume of the breasts.

On the other hand, combination breast lift with implants (a.k.a., augmentation-mastopexy) simultaneously creates a perkier breast shape and boosts the volume of the breasts. Incorporating implants into the lift procedure increases the size and fullness of the breasts, particularly in the upper breast area to create more cleavage. The result is similar to what you see when wearing a push-up bra.

What Procedure Is Right for Me?

The procedure that is best for you depends on your unique anatomy and what you hope to achieve from surgery.

The best way to determine whether you need breast lift with or without implants is to ask yourself, are you happy with your breast size? If you are satisfied with the size of your bust, but bothered by the sagging that occurs when you take off your bra, breast lift without implants is probably ideal for you.

On the other hand, if you are unhappy with the size of your bust and breast sagging, and you desire more cleavage, you are probably a better candidate for breast lift with implants.

Why Gynecomastia Correction Is One of the Most Popular Male Plastic Surgery Procedures

There was a time when the overwhelming majority of plastic surgery patients were women. Nowadays, it isn’t at all unusual for a man to pursue plastic surgery to correct features that bother him. Plastic surgeons like Dr. Alexander Ereso has seen a noticeable uptick in the number of men requesting plastic surgery.

In this post, Dr. Ereso wants to discuss one of the most popular procedures among male patients: male breast reduction to correct gynecomastia.

Understanding Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition in which men develop enlarged or oversized breasts. It may occur due to hormonal changes, genetic factors or medication use. Men with true gynecomastia have excessive glandular tissue, which cannot be reduced through diet and exercise efforts like fat reduction can. Glandular tissue must be removed surgically. The weight of the tissue can cause the breasts to sag and the areolas (dark skin surrounding the nipple) may enlarge as well.

Gynecomastia is often associated with feelings of emotional discomfort and low self-esteem. Many men with gynecomastia withdraw from social activities and intimacy because they are embarrassed by feminine-looking breasts.

Male Breast Reduction Surgery

During gynecomastia correction, Dr. Ereso excises excess breast tissue and use liposuction techniques to remove additional excess fatty tissue from the breasts and chest. This flattens the breasts and creates a more masculine-looking chest contour. The addition of ultrasonic liposuction can be used to help tighten sagging skin.  The size of an enlarged areola is also reduced. Dr. Ereso perform the entire operation through a small incision along the lower border of the areola which, when healed, becomes inconspicuous.

Anesthesia is administered for complete patient comfort. Scarring is minimal and a return to normal routine occurs after about a week. Men usually take a week or less off from work after surgery, and are able to resume normal exercise about a month post-op. The results continue to improve for three to six months after surgery.

Men typically experience a boost in self-confidence and happiness after surgery. The confidence that comes from having a defined, masculine chest is undeniable. Many men find themselves eager to expand their social lives, move forward with their careers and re-enter the dating pool after gynecomastia correction.
