At our cosmetic surgery center in Mountain View, California, we offer less invasive non surgical procedures such as collagen injections to Palo Alto, Los Altos, Silicon Valley, San Jose, and Bay Area residents who desire a rejuvenated, youthful face but do not need major work done. Collagen is a substance useful for treatment of smile lines and frown lines and for improving the fullness of your lips.
Collagen is a naturally occurring supportive tissue in all living skin. Collagen is now derived from two sources for clinical use: human and bovine (cow). Approximately 3 in 100 people are allergic to 'cow' collagens; therefore, it is imperative that you have skin testing at least one month prior to your first treatment if you are planning treatment with the traditional bovine derived collagen. Patients receiving human based collagen injections usually DO NOT need to undergo skin testing. Be sure to discuss safety issues with Dr. Pearl and his staff. Prior to receiving collagen injections, all Palo Alto and Bay Area patients undergo a thorough consultation at our cosmetic surgery center in nearby Mountain View, California. Dr. Samuel Pearl's staff will explain the collagen injection procedure, answer any questions you may have, and determine if it is the appropriate course of action for your particular case.
Collagen is a substance useful for treatment of frown lines, "crow's feet" and smile lines. Collagen containing local anesthetic is injected with a tiny needle directly into the wrinkle, crease or depression. Collagen plumps up the soft tissue, filling in lines and depressions by replacing the natural collagen that is lost from your skin over time.

A personal consultation with Dr. Pearl's nurse is the first step to assess your physical and emotional health and discuss your specific cosmetic goals. She will then determine if you are a good candidate for collagen replacement therapy. She will discuss your history of allergies particularly to beef and whether there is a history of autoimmune disease, i.e. Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Fibromyalgia, etc. She will then place a skin test in your more dominant arm. There is usually no reaction. A reddened, elevated response similar to a mosquito bite may be indicative of an allergy to collagen. Usually this will occur within 1-3 days, but occasionally it will take 2-3 weeks to see a positive response. This is why it is important to wait at least 4 weeks between testing and your first treatment. Dr. Pearl and his staff have been performing collagen treatments for 20 years with minimal complications. It is important to understand that collagen treatments last only 2-4 months and will be periodically repeated to maintain a desired result. Remember, if you use human derived collagen, (Cosmoplast™), skin testing is usually not necessary.

Following injections of collagen, post-treatment redness can last several hours. Palpable irregularities can be massaged immediately after treatment and frequently will minimize bruising. Usually normal activities can be resumed several hours after collagen treatment. Collagen has proven to be a safe and effective means of softening smile and frown lines, and it is an excellent means of enhancing lip fullness.

Dr. Pearl also gives patients the option of filling wrinkles, lines and sunken areas around their cheeks and under their eyes with their own fat in a microstructural fat grafting procedure. As a soft tissue filler, fat provides a natural look and feel, and can help recreate a youthful appearance around the eyes, cheeks and temples. Dr. Pearl will discuss possible treatment with micro fat injections during your initial consultation. These injections require local anesthesia for the fat removal as well as the injections. Recovery time will be longer than treatment with other cosmetic dermal fillers, including collagen. Contact our cosmetic surgery practice in Mountain View, California for more information about microstructural fat injections.
