Facts About Fraxel

Young latin woman on white background. For the past 10 years, Fraxel has been the gold standard of fractional skin resurfacing. Dr. Pearl and our staff have been able to treat many common skin imperfections and irregularities with the technology. Given that Fraxel treatment is so popular, we receive many questions about it. Dr. Pearl has compiled the most frequently asked questions below.

What does Fraxel treat?

With the Fraxel re:stor Dual 1550/1927 system, we can treat deep and superficial imperfections of the skin on the face, neck, chest and hands, including:

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Acne scars
  • Surgical scars
  • Age spots
  • Melasma
  • Freckles
  • Irregular texture

The 1550 wavelength erbium fiber laser penetrates the deep layers of the skin, and the 1927 wavelength thulium fiber laser treats the superficial layers. We can easily switch between the two wavelengths during treatment, depending on your needs.

How does Fraxel work?

The Fraxel laser creates microscopic injuries in the skin, removes damaged skin and stimulates the body to produce fresh skin cells. Fractional laser skin resurfacing creates microscopic injuries in a portion, or “fraction,” of the skin; this triggers the body’s natural production of collagen. The pattern of micro-injuries leaves undisturbed tissue intact between the injuries, which enables quicker healing with minimal downtime.

As more collagen develops, the skin starts to look smoother and healthier, and flaws become less visible.

How many Fraxel treatments do I need?

Studies show that on average, three to five sessions spaced two to four weeks apart are most effective. Depending on your needs, we may recommend spacing the treatment sessions further apart. You should notice some improvement immediately, continually improving until optimal improvement is reached after one to two months.

Does Fraxel treatment hurt?

No, Fraxel treatment does not hurt. Before starting treatment, we will apply a topical anesthetic to the area to be treated. You may feel some heat during treatment, but this is minimized by a chilled spray of air using the Cool Roller tip technology. Some patients have described a sunburn sensation after treatment, which can be soothed by applying cold compresses.

What is Fraxel recovery like?

The Fraxel re:stor laser is designed to produce great results with very little downtime. Besides the sunburn sensation and mild redness, there are very few reported side effects. Generally, the 1927 wavelength is more tolerable to patients because it only treats the superficial layers of the skin.

Juvederm Releases New Dermal Filler Product

Juvederm Voluma XCThe makers of Juvederm have released a unique new product that is quickly gaining popularity among plastic surgeons and patients alike. Juvederm Voluma XC is the first and only FDA-approved filler designed specifically for the cheek area. It replenishes lost skin volume in the cheeks, plumping and lifting areas that require cosmetic enhancement and structure.

Dr. Samuel Pearl is pleased to add Voluma XC to his selection of non-surgical injectable products that rejuvenate an aging face and restore a youthful glow. Voluma XC may be administered on its own or combined with another rejuvenating treatment for a more transformative result.

What Voluma XC Corrects

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that helps the skin maintain structure and volume. With age, it’s common for the body’s hyaluronic acid supply to deplete. This causes the face to lose volume, specifically in the mid-face or cheek area. The cheeks may start to look hollow and the cheekbones and chin may lose their definition.

Voluma XC is an injectable gel specially formulated to:

  • Smooth and restore volume loss in the mid-face
  • Correct sunken areas of the cheek
  • Enhance the youthful contours of the chin

Voluma XC Treatment: What to Expect

Voluma XC is administered very similarly to other filler products, such as Restylane, Radiesse and Artefill. Treatment is performed in Dr. Pearl’s office, and takes an hour or less.

Because of its special formulation, Voluma XC does not require a skin pre-test. The injectable gel contains lidocaine for a more comfortable patient experience.

Dr. Pearl or our aesthetician will carefully inject small amounts of Voluma XC into the treatment area with a small cannula. They will be strategic in where they place the product and how much they use, depending on the degree of correction needed and the size of the treated area. Voluma XC may be injected into the apex, “apples” or hollows of the cheek.

There is no downtime after treatment and results appear almost instantly. It is important to avoid putting pressure on the treated area (this could cause the product to migrate). Voluma XC may cause temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness, firmness, redness or discoloration.

Dramatic, Long-Lasting Results

After Voluma XC treatment, the face will look naturally fuller and rounder, taking on a more youthful quality.

Amazingly, results are possible in just one treatment. And what’s more: the results have been shown to last up to two years. Over time, the body will absorb the hyaluronic acid. Repeat treatments are necessary to maintain the results.

Reverse the Appearance of Aging with Facial Rejuvenation Surgery

A brow lift, also called a forehead lift or eyebrow lift, corrects the skin wrinkling and loss of tone that causes sagging of eyebrows and hooding of upper eyelids. A brow lift softens the deep creases across the forehead, reduces horizontal frown lines at the top of your nose and vertical lines between your brows. The result is a more relaxed and refreshed appearance. It is the only procedure that can increase the distance from the lateral brow to the upper eyelashes.

A brow lift is often performed along with a face lift or other facial rejuvenation procedures. Some people have brow lifts to correct aging problems, while others have inherited traits that cause them to seek treatment in their 20s or 30s. You may be a good candidate for a brow lift if you have any of the following types of conditions:

  • If you have drooping lateral brows that are close to or below your orbital bony rim
  • If you feel you always look angry or scowling
  • If you like your appearance and your brows and eyelids when you pull up your forehead with your fingers at your hairline above your lateral brows
  • If you desire the ideal benefits of facial rejuvenation and you are already considering a face and neck lift

For more information about the Brow Lift procedure, contact Dr. Pearl, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Mountain View, California.
